If possible, ask the class to keep silent for the duration of the raid so as to allow anyone who can, put themselves in the place of a real evacuee in a real air raid. Use the following link to play the siren. Play the siren for a few moments and allow the children to imagine what it would be like. Ask the children to get underneath their tables as this is what children would have done in an actual air raid. The air raid (about 5 minutes) is played. Those in the class who would like to try one on are handed a gas mask and shown how to put one on. The children will be shown how to use a gas mask. The sequence of events in a typical air raid is outlined. The group is seated and safe practice is explained. Children are shown the original air raid posters and asked why it is white lettering on a black background and asked how these might make them feel. Explain the reasoning for the drill to the children, and that during the war air raid drills were practiced regularly, and the more they practice they less likely they will be to panic. Turn the lights off and explain that a blackout has occurred.
